MAP is pleased to announce Amy Boone-McCreesh as the selected curator for the 2012 Curators’ Incubator Program. Established in 2003, the program was designed to assist aspiring curators in developing and presenting an exhibition at MAP.

The Sum of the Parts is an exhibition of four east coast, contemporary artists that utilize repetitive processes as a means of building grander works. Sculpture, installation, and drawing are explored through processes such as knitting, cutting paper, and mold-making for this multi-media exhibition.

Janet Cardiff's "The Forty Part Motet" is on view at MoMA PS1 until January 9th as part of the September 11 exhibit. It is the 2nd time I've seen it in person and I can say it is one of the most moving art experiences I've ever had. Just as good the second time around.

I just finished listening to the audio book version of Just Kids, by Patti Smith, read by Patti Smith. In it she tells and sings the story of her young life with Robert Mapplethorp and of their art-making relationship that entwined them together. It was just so beautiful. In 2008 I was able to see an exhibit of Mapplethorp polaroids at the Whitney and these served in my mind as a backdrop to this heartfelt story.

For my birthday this weekend I went to the quilt show at the armory. The display alone was amazing. After that I went to the butterfly conservatory at the natural history museum. I've lived in NY for 7 years, can't believe I waited this long to hang out with the bugs.

Last weekend I went to see the Ursula von Rydingsvard show at the Sculpture Center in Long Island City. It was very peaceful as her works have a calming powerful presence in the space. I especially loved the weeping plates (as seen above on the back wall) and wish I could take them home with me. (You can see more of her art on the Galerie Lelong website.)

The Anselm Kiefer show at gagosian now through Dec. 18th is a must see. The painting on the right was one of my favorites. That and others and the large vitrines full of hanging sunflowers and burnt objects. Could have stood and stared for hours, but it was so crowded.

this is not a fail.

all the comments on my last post have had me thinking, trying to figure out an appropriate response to everyone. I really appreciate everyone sharing their thoughts with me.

yes. some colors have a great deal of history and significance. I think it's okay for me to try to use them anyway, but I have to accept when they are too referential and move on. or accept when they are too referential in a good way and run with it.

for every object I share that I'm happy with, I usually make at least five things that are destroyed because I'm not happy with them. and sometimes I'm not happy with them for very small reasons. I shared the fail, because it is an important part of my process.

even if something is a fail, it usually gives me insight into the future things I make. and this good. it is a celebrated fail.

in other good news, the art sale I participated in, to benefit the gulf restoration network, has made a total of $5400 in one week, which is awesome. the store is going to stay open for a few more days to see if we can reach a total of $6000.

Loving sculptures by Katie Niewodowski. She plays with all sorts of materials like gap filler, model magic, polymer clay, and silicone, and combines them in fabulous innovative ways. The outcome is fantasy cell inspired stuctures that look like ice cream.

This week has been busy. Lots of events, that whole summertime thing. I'm currently trying to treat New York as if I was a tourist and go do all those things that you can only do here. This week I tried to eat oysters. I still don't really get it, but I went to the oyster bar in grand central which was beautiful and has been around since 1913. According to wikipedia: The archway in front of the restaurant is also famous for an acoustical quirk, by which someone standing in one corner can hear someone standing in the other corner perfectly no matter how softly they speak. I tested this and it works. I fixed the windows in my bedroom and ended up creating such intense fumes that I had to sleep in the garden. And I rode the circle line around manhattan. Now I just have to get up and go to work tomorrow.

And as a reminder the art sale benefiting the Gulf Restoration Network goes online tomorrow at noon.

Hello blog. Here are some snapshots of different things I'm playing with.
I wanted to share the news that I'm participating in this. It's a fundraiser organized by Meighan over at my love for you is a stampede of horses and all proceeds are going to the Gulf Restoration Network. I will be selling a small/affordable piece of crocheted art. There are many many awesome artists participating and the store will be online and open on Monday June 28th. In the coming days Meighan will be posting updates about all the participating artists and specific works for sale. I will post some updated news about it here, along with a picture of the piece next week. I hope it can find a good home.
